You have to understand, my dears, that the shortest distance between truth and a human being is a story.- Anthony De Mello
Since we are able to draw cave paintings, story telling has been our most powerful communication method.
As kids, we were spell bound by amazing stories.
By telling a story, you can capture the imagination of the reader.
Here are some tips on what you should consider when you tell a story about your company.
1. How do you stand out?
Dig deeper to find out what is unique about your business. Beyond price, ask your customers why they choose your business over your competition. Try to be as specific as possible. Don’t use vague terms such as ‘quality’ to describe your uniqueness –
2. Your story about how the business was found
Why was the business founded? What makes the founder tick? Leave money and profits out of the equation, as they are just a result. Use your heart to answer these questions.
3. What problem is your company trying to solve
Unless you are solving someone’s problem in a unique way, it is impossible for your business to exist. Explain these problems in detail how you go about solving them.
4. What ‘light bulb’ moments did your company have:
Explain how the ‘blinding flash of the obvious’ has shaped your business. How did these ‘AHA’ moments come about
5. Has your business changed:
Since inception how has your business changed and evolved and why
6. What is a novel way to share your story?
A video, info graphics, storyboards etc… are excellent ways to share your story.
7. What do you consider normal & boring that others would find fascinating.
Something in your background, your daily routine and habits, which you consider normal, may be fascinating to others. Share it.
Love to hear your story!
