We have an idea. Next thing we know is we have started a business.
Enter Start-Up Utopia
Entrepreneurs are ‘ideas’ people. They enter start-up utopia and take on an owner/manager role. Time poor and money poor, they put everything in to it so that the business can grow. They have their hands on everything. They know everything that is happening in their business. They can even become control freaks.
Enter Growing Pains
Now the business is growing the entrepreneur cannot cope. Periodically they drop the ball. They have two choices. Carry on as usual and hope everything will work itself out or ‘evolve’ to the next stage.
Enter People Person
Growth demands the entrepreneur evolves and start becoming a ‘people person’. This demands delegation, installing systems and learning to trust – becoming a leader.
This phase of entrepreneur’s growth is very challenging. They must trust others to look after their baby. Having done things ‘their way’, they demand others do it the same way and realise it will not happen all the time.
Enter Baby Sitters
Some entrepreneurs build teams that can limit the growth of their business. This is because they still want the baby to remain a baby and build a team of “baby sitters”. These types of businesses have little or no systems and most of their decisions are still referred to the owner. A sign that the business owner cannot let go.
Enter THE Entrepreneur
On the other hand, when an entrepreneur decides its time to let the baby grow they realise ‘they’ (the entrepreneur) need to grow first! They build teams and systems that deliver better, scalable results than the business owner ever could . These skills are not part of the entrepreneur’s armoury and they do not come naturally to them. The key is the business owner recognising their limitations and seeking help. This is where a business coach can help and bring the best out of the business owner.
Entrepreneurship is a continual ‘learning and growing’ process. Business owners who are not willing to learn and grow – the I KNOW everything there is to know about my business types – are not only stunning the growth of their business, but also putting their business at risk of being wiped out by the competition. Personal transformation in any area of life is not easy, let alone in business.
Business growth follows the business owners growth and NOT the other way around.
